About Giant Steps Therapeutic Equestrian Center:

Giant Steps Therapeutic Equestrian Center

Giant Steps Therapeutic Equestrian Center is based on the belief that caring for and riding horses can be a powerful tool for healing individuals with physical, emotional and developmental challenges. We offer life-changing experiences to people of all ages with a wide range of disabilities including autism, Down Syndrome, and cerebral palsy.. Giant Steps is a non-profit 501(c)(3) corporation that receives no state or federal funding.

Currently, our riders range in age from 4 to 85 years, and come to us from seven Bay Area counties.  We offer programming for Veterans returning from combat and active service military, including individuals living with post-traumatic stress disorder.  We also work with youth considered to be “at risk.”

Therapeutic Riding effectively helps strengthen and tone the rider’s muscles and improve balance, flexibility, head control and eye/hand coordination. Concentration, patience and self-esteem improve as the rider focuses on the responsibility of safely guiding their equine partner, mounted or otherwise. In our program, participants are able to build life skills that support their independence.

At Giant Steps, one of our top priorities is to offer our programs to those who can benefit regardless of financial circumstance. On average, 53% of our riders receive additional scholarships with 43% receiving services at no cost. By subsidizing our program costs and offering a scholarship program, we ensure that no one is turned away from our services for lack of means. Our at-risk youth program and military program are always free of charge.
